Re-engineer Yourself or Perish!

When Charles Darwin claimed that “survival goes not to the strongest or most intelligent of the species, but to the one most adaptable to change”, many did not really take him serious until recently. In this brief article, I want to make a helpful attempt at whispering to individuals the secret to thriving in a fast-paced labour market, and also let companies understand the key to sustainable market dominance.

Yesterday, I had a chat with a new, friendly and vibrant client – one of the trainees in our 16th intake of the Certificate in Public Speaking and Presentation Mastery short course. Her role in the company she works with is to keep ears on ground and eyes on the horizon, monitor changes that are happening or likely to happen soon, and then “re-engineer the processes” involved while managing the change at hand. A very intelligent and up-to-the-task lady, she indicated that without this, they would be humiliated by competition and overwhelmingly run into irrelevancy to customers.

In recent years, great companies (and individuals) have been rudely awakened by the ruthless waves of unstoppable changes in their industries – changes that left them down and out. During an acquisition brief, a CEO of one of those companies, tearfully said, “We did not do anything wrong, but somehow, we lost”. The reality was that the world changed too fast and their opponents were too powerful.

A World on a Rollercoaster:
The world is on a terrible rush!

  • The rate of information “growth” is startling. For example in 1980, about 220,000 new books were published each year in the US. In 2013, it was estimated at more than 3 million new books, plus millions of articles on every imaginable subject. Today, one idea can build a huge industry and replace an old one in just less than a week!
  • The speed of technological advancement is unprecedented. While one is busy bragging about the “newest super-fast equipment” they have procured to shorten the duration of service delivery to “one hour only”, there is already a newer, ultra-fast alternative that makes delivery instant on a click of a button.
  • The hitherto respected approaches to doing almost everything have become obsolete. The once revered methods of handling operations no longer deliver the results they used to deliver.

I could go on and on about the dizzying rate of change but time and space won’t allow me to (unless it was a training I often give staff of companies on “Being Friendly to Change” or the training for CEOs and managers on “Business Leadership in the 21st Century”. There, we go deep.)

The Way Forward:
I suggest three starting points, among many others:

(1) Individual re-engineering.
As an individual, you have to keep reinventing yourself to remain relevant. One of the top banks in the city of Kampala invited me to take their staff through a whole week of empowerment, equipping them to productively transition from the old to the new realities of a certain department. Adding two small words just in the name of the department meant unimaginable implications to staff therein in terms of attitude, personal branding, self-packaging, and personal development in general. You either re-engineer yourself or, I lovingly warn you, you are about to become institutionally irrelevant and be systematically phased out.

Most of the training institutions where most people were trained from taught them what to learn and think instead of how to learn and think. As a result, these people have had to struggle with fixed mind-sets, rigid attitudes, and quite stiff necks in the way they approach life and work. If you are one of them and re-engineering has not come to your mind, the time to start is…? Yesterday! That is why, like I am going to be equipping 1,000 civil servants for 3 days this week, you have to learn dynamics of personal development and how to be the most valued employee / employer.

(2) Continuous Staff Development:
At institutional level, companies and/or organizations have to build highly effective teams, continuously equip those teams, not just in technical aspects of their work but mostly in the soft skills area. The CEO and General Manager of a group of companies that operates transport and agricultural businesses visited my office yesterday morning. In our discussion, I shared with them that quite often, what customers look for is not what we are offering them – until we go an extra mile to study their needs and offer relevant services. We concluded that most of the top needs of the clients in any industry are not goods and services themselves, but how clients are served, the quality of the relationship, the swiftness of the staff, the customer care, among others – most of which are intangible yet uncompromising determinants of success. I intend to write another article on this issue especially in line with who empowers the staff.

(3) Strategy and execution:
This is why strategy and swift strategy execution have never been as important as they are today. This is requires a leadership and/or management team that knows what to focus on a daily basis, not being distracted by the nitty-gritties of operation and forgetting the gigantic role of strategic direction. This is requires the kind of leadership that will leave the fire fighting to the right team and concentrate on holding the binoculars – like an MD of a huge institution called it in our planning meeting for an intensive 3-day team building retreat we are facilitating for all their top managers next week.

CEOs need to be clear about their roles. Top on the list in my view is: Strategist (future direction of the company); ambassador (meet with important customers, know them and they too know you); inventor (find the customer’s pain and develop products and services to relieve him of that pain); mentor (become a teacher, coach and mentor to your direct reports to help them get the big picture); investor (treat your company like an investment, know its market vaue and try to grow it); the student (actively pursue professional development even as a student of leadership, not just in your area of expertise). Stay focused on your CEO role.

Conclusion:
Malcolm Gladwell rightly said, “What brought you here won’t take you there”. Do not be your worst enemy. Keep re-engineering yourself as an individual and collectively as a company so that you do not become irrelevant and be overwhelmed by the inevitably fast changes. It is up to you. Do yourself a favour. Do the most patriotic thing: offering your nation or continent the most holistically developed human resource for development.

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A JOKE: Success Lessons from Uganda’s Minister of Finance – Hon. Matia Kasaija.

Fellow leaders, did you know that the hot seat is real and the spotlight is not as light as we often think?

This was seen when Hon. Matia Kasaija – Uganda’s Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development – furiously walked out of the studios of NBS TV few days ago, vehemently saying, “I am not going to argue with an ignorant man.”

Whereas that was his estimation of his program host – which he is entitled to – I kept thinking that we, leaders, need to do our best to build emotional intelligence that’s stronger than the challenging environment around us so that when we are pushed to the wall of desperation, our emotions won’t pave way for the eternally ugly.

THE COLD SIDE OF SERVICE:
Here are unavoidable truths about leadership and/or service:

  1. Within the acceptance to lead a community lies the invitation to be scrutinized.
  2. In choosing to be in public service, we, by default, sign in to both the admiration of the like-minded and the bullets of the differently-persuaded.
  3. In aspiring to offer any sort of guidance to masses through electronic media, we, in essence, bring ourselves to the questioning table where opportunity abounds – either for setting the record straight or making the path more crooked.

I strongly suggest: the strength of a leader lies neither in running away from real or perceived problems nor in abhorring the insistent disturbances of those with contrary opinion but in facing his fears, meeting his challengers, and winning relationships instead of arguments. We cannot always run away or be defensive. We don’t have to always win (though politics says something different!)

AUDIENCE MANAGEMENT IS A SKILL:
As an inspirational public speaker and trainer for many years now, I’ve interfaced with all types of people with different motives. Some have asked me humiliating questions. Others have offered despising comments. And others have given cynical answers to some of my questions during those sessions.

But in all, I don’t remember a day I walked out of a session because someone challenged my school of thought — including the session where a young man “cut off my neck” verbally before the start of my presentation one day!

Good news: about 99% of the people I have addressed were cooperative, participatory and receptive. I choose to focus on those, not, for example, the small boy who one time gave an answer that disorganized my 300-strong audience one afternoon!

This is why in the Certificate in Public Speaking and Presentation Mastery course of Inspired Leaders International we have a whole 2-hour unit on “Dynamics of Effective Audience Management.” (The 16th intake runs from 9th to 17th July 2018).

RESPONSE YIELDS RESULT:
Come to think about this.

  • Why should we only expect the easy?
  • Why should we only demand for the simple?
  • Why should be only look forward to the supportive?
  • Isn’t that living in the idealistic world and never being in the reality of today?

Granted, we too are human beings who get hurt, disappointed and frustrated. We get angry, annoyed and sad. However, the greatest lesson of emotional intelligence I have ever learnt is this:

  • What matters is not what happens to us but what we do about it.
  • What matters is not what others do to us but how we choose to respond to that stimulus.
  • The people that enjoy life the most are not those who have or receive only the best in life but those who make the best of whatever life brings to them.

BEAUTY FOR ASHES:
So let’s be encouraged.

  • Out of trials can come triumphs.
  • Out of what looks like an ugly mess, we can craft a beautiful message.
  • In today’s tests of life are hidden the testimonies of tomorrow.
  • Without breakdowns, we often can’t experience breakthroughs.
  • Let’s approach our pain with an expectation of gain at the end.

So, dear Hon. Minister, whereas I can imagine how angry you felt while being put on spot by the insistent (and maybe annoying) questioner, please find the heart to walk in again in future and complete the unfinished business that falls under your docket. That’s the stuff that transformational leaders who leave an enduring legacy are made of. Don’t walk out again, regardless of how you feel about the program. (I even don’t remember your boss – the president – doing that, even when he too has been under serious scrutiny at some points during interviews and media briefs.)

There’s a better way, even if it is the difficult way. And all of us can aspire to take the high road, by the help of the Almighty. Leadership is not a bed of roses. Service is not a cup of tea. Being under scrutiny is not a tin of honey.

Are the right people in the right places?

Are YOU the right person in the right place? This morning, in my personal development hour, I came across a wise observation by King Solomon of Israel. He said:

“There is another evil I have seen under the sun. Kings and rulers make a grave mistake when they give great authority to foolish people and low positions to people of proven worth. I have even seen servants riding horseback like princes—and princes walking like servants!” (Ecclesiastes 10:5-7, NLT)

While this is one of the ironies of life, applied to the management of human resource, these are Human Resource mistakes that those in charge often make:

1. Giving great authority to foolish people. This is a strong statement, isn’t it? But isn’t it true that often we find people in the office of the Head of department who are fit to be in the “lowest” position in the company by virtue of their character, level of productivity, attitude to work, time management, motives for work, interpersonal skills, anger management, organization, and strategic thinking? Woe unto you if you’re the one being referred to here!

2. Giving low positions to people of proven worth. I often say that positions don’t matter; one can lead from anywhere. True indeed, because many entities are being influenced by this “tea girl” who places every cup on every table with a smile and a listening ear, having information in almost every office, and speaking wisely into the lives of every worker. Everyone actually calls her ‘mama’ despite her age. That said, however, there are things that won’t happen without being in certain positions in an organization. That’s why specific people who have over a period of time proven their worth should be cascaded into certain positions so they can add more significant value to the programs and processes of the institution from that vintage point. Organizational politics is what keeps people of proven worth in low positions to the disadvantage of the whole entity.

3. Dishing out great perks and non-pecuniary benefits to those who don’t deserve them, leaving the high performers unrewarded. This will always happen where there is no human resource and performance management system in place amidst having many staff on board. And it frustrates the high performer while keeping the underperformer in his laid-back position. How is your rewards (and sanctions) policy? What are the welfare guidelines like?

Conclusion:

When I shared this, my friend Horeb Mpobwengye responded:

“You are making me remember the statement that people with power have no ideas and those with ideas have no power.”

  • Don’t you think it’s time to put the right people in the right places and also treat them as they deserve if we expect them to perform as they should?
  • Like I reflected yesterday morning, it is not true that people are the most important resource; only the RIGHT people are.
  • And when we find them, we are better off having them in the right places than throwing them anywhere we can find.

DON’T BRING YOURSELF DOWN.

If you claim to really love yourself, your dreams, and your future, why do you again pull yourself down at every opportunity? Stop what you’re doing; let’s briefly think together!

Our Ugandan team at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast did very well, surprising sceptics with gold and silver medals! It reminded me of two weeks ago at the Inspired Leaders International office in Kampala, when M/s. Agnes Nabende – a calm, composed and collected lady – said: “I may not be UP there, but I don’t want to bring myself DOWN.” I immediately wrote it on the white board at office as the quote of the day.

You may quickly say, “I am not among those who bring themselves down.” Well, that can be determined by where you stand on the following ways how some people do it:

  1. Speaking negatively of their ability, calling that being honest with self. (“I know I am very weak.”)
  2. Volunteering to discourage themselves under the guise of being “realistic”. (“I can’t manage that.”)
  3. Cancelling private prayers with public declarations. (“I don’t give a damn if you don’t like my products” – after praying, “Lord bring more customers.”)
  4. Frequently associating with voluntary discouragers whose major “strength” is being negative and sceptic about every idea.
  5. Always editing dreams downwards, calling it “adjusting to new realities”!
  6. Isolating yourself from others who are swinging into positive action.
  7. Refusing to believe other people’s positive and genuine compliments, pushing away comments such as “You’re smart”.

Now come to think of it: why do some people bring themselves down like that?

I volunteer some 6 possible answers below:

  1. They have a mountain of low self-esteem and don’t believe they deserve “UP there”. So whenever they rise, their heart whispers: “Bring yourself back to where I think you belong.”
  2. They’ve been hit on every side by other people’s disparaging remarks that centred around “toning down on ambition”. So whenever they aspire for greater, they remember the verdict of their company.
  3. They’ve had a storm of painful experences and allowed those situations to punch their morale down to zero. So when they take a step forward, they take two backwards to avoid the possibility of more pain.
  4. They’ve received a technical knockout from several failed attempts and now believe they shouldn’t dare try again.
  5. They’ve often compared themselves with others who seem to be doing better, looking better, and worth more. So the negative self-consciousness keeps them afraid.
  6. They think they’re being humble by pulling themselves down. They’ve been told not to tell others that they’re well. So they cut their reality into half to look humble!

Here therefore, are 3 quick issues for you to really think about from today:

  1. Building self-confidence and having a high self-esteem will protect you from internal insecurities and external exploitation.
  2. Past failed attempts have no power over your current aspirations unless you allow them to.
  3. Other people’s words are neither prescriptive of how you should live your life nor descriptive of the colour of your future.

In conclusion, let’s listen again to the words of Agnes: “I may not be UP there, but I don’t want to bring myself DOWN.” Remember, no one (I repeat: NO ONE) can step on your back unless YOU bend it. While you may not yet be “up there” where you want to be, be glad you are no longer “down there” where you used to be, and thus do not pull yourself down where you don’t deserve to be.

Happy New Month? Really?

Another month is gone and a new one is here. I have three questions, three challenges and three suggestions to make this a great month ever.

The Three Questions:

Before you celebrate ENTRANCE into the new month, I invite you to first do serious reflection about your EXIT out of the past month by answering these three simple questions:

  1. What have you done in the last month that you can call fruitful and productive?
  2. Who (or what kind of person) have you progressively become as a result of your engagements in that period?
  3. What have you achieved that you truly proud of as the fruit of your labour, the work of your hands?

The Three Challenges:

Okay, so as you say HAPPY NEW MONTH these two to three days or so, allow me kindly pose these three challenges:

  1. Is “Happy New Month” just a mere WISH for the gods to swing a magic wand or a DECISION by you to make it a month worth celebrating, enjoying and cherishing?
  2. Are you just wishing things get better or choosing to make them better? If all wishes were horses…!
  3. Are you hoping that the month somehow brings good news or it is a commitment to make right things happen rightly? Remember, hope is not a strategy.

The Three Questions:

As you ride on, what if you thought of acting on the following three suggestions?

  1. See what has NOT worked in the previous month(s), genuinely reflect on the possible causes, and carefully restrategize how to win in the new month. This needs to be in ALL aspects of your life such as financially, intellectually, spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally, professionally, to mention but a few.
  2. Specifically take another sharper look at your circle of friends. What kind are they? For example: Do they encourage or discourage you? Do they inspire good manners or model reckless living? Are they progressing in their own lives and flying higher like eagles or are they teaching you “The 5 Steps to Being a Duck”? Please take radical decisions in this area this month.
  3. Reconsider your time commitments this month. Are you going to invest your time or merely spend it? Is there going to be a high Return on Investment (ROI) on those meetings, parties and conferences you’re planning to be engaged in or it’s going to be a waste of precious time? Time is the greatest, non-renewable and most defiant resource. Lose this minute and it’s gone forever!

So, happy New month to me as I make it a happy New month through my deliberate actions, intentional choices and specifically planned moves. Happy month to you too if you have laid strategies for making strides forward and touching other lives in the process.

Otherwise this month will just be “The Month of Nothing” however much someone encourages you that it is going to be a month of whatever: Exponential Growth, Double Blessings, Financial Abundance, Marital Bliss, Social Impact, 3 Miracles, Academic Wonders, Unexpected Promotion, or Instant Turnaround!

Things don’t just happen; you go out there and make them happen. You can do that this month. Like the title of one of my books says, YOU WILL MANAGE.

Anything POSITIVE today?

First, a problem once shared is half solved. Not so? Or is it? Well, it depends on who you share it with and what they do about it (if any). Even then, bottling up your problems doesn’t make you any better. Secondly, sharing your problems doesn’t make you weak; it only shows the trust you have for others. However, ALWAYS sharing only PROBLEMS is not a trust issue; it shows your corrosive appetite for negativity.

My friend and fellow trainer Joan Mugenzi said, “There are people whose [social media] walls seem like there’s nothing positive happening in their lives. Positive begets positive and the reverse is true.” This was in response to my question: “Why allow people force you to remember and share your problems with them just so you don’t look like you have none?”

Here is an important truth: There are many problems all of us have gone through and we all handle them differently. But it is amazing how at times you’re just under pressure to “share your problems too” so that you fit in a culture / club / association that believes in everyone sharing their PROBLEMS.

While some of us often step on our problems and focus our eyes on the opportunities, you find that many in those environments are visibly not interested either in knowing which opportunities you see, or stepping forward to utilize any of them. But they’re waiting for you to “please share YOUR problems too”.

Of course some people have gone to an extent of saying do NOT share your problems with ANYONE because while some don’t REALLY care what you go through, others are glad you’re going through it — and even the remaining percentage is busy thinking about their own problems! This statement doesn’t represent my own position at all, but I think it has some point to think about!

Personally, I strongly believe that sharing is caring. I share and allow others to do so. My only issue is this: Must every sharing be about PROBLEMS? Why can’t we, for example, start to share the blessings we’ve got, the opportunities we’ve seen, and even the food we’ve harvested from our gardens?

I will make this disclaimer again: This is neither about burying problems as if they don’t exist nor about being too secretive to let other people into one’s life. No. But having seen what our past has been, time has come to force our minds to “think on THESE things” (see Philippians 4:8 for THESE things) and only pick out one or two that are worth ruminating about.

So here is my verdict: Have people in your life with whom you share deep issues in your life but please do NOT allow them to put you under pressure to share problems always!

The underlying principle in all this is: WHATEVER YOU FOCUS ON WILL EXPAND FOR YOU!

  • Focus on problems, and you will get a good bundle.
  • Focus on opportunities and blessings, and your eyes will be exercised enough to spot many more. Period.
  • For once, endeavour to be positive today or else try your level best to keep your mouth shut. It may save your destiny better!

So, anything positive today?

Do you know that you’re just an article away from your greatest idea ever, just a chapter away from your next biggest opportunity, just a book away from your wonder-filling breakthrough today? We claim to not have time for reading, but the truth is that THAT is just a Self-Management Statement (SMS)!

  • That SMS indicates where our priorities are.
  • That SMS is a confession of how much we want to grow.
  • That SMS depicts how deep we want to understand.
  • That SMS exposes how much we really want to learn.
  • Time is not an issue of resource, but of priority.

If you’ve even read this far on a post that doesn’t immediately promise 5 steps to ‘hot sex’ or 3 top secrets to too much money or the 1 thing you must not forget to win a political race: ● There is nothing that will stop you from succeeding in life. ● You’re one in a million — maybe one in 700 million. ● You’re going to change this world by all means. Secret to Enhancing your Looks and Building a Happier World!

Did you ever know that you have the power to make yourself more beautiful/handsome without spending any single coin? How about you making the world a bit happier everyday without spending any money?

Today, a brother wrote a piece titled, “A smile never hurts anyone.” Indeed, it never hurts anyone (unless you smile at their misfortune)! The smile is the priceless, non-tiring secret…

Please consider the following two issues now:

First, a smile is therapeutic.

The availability of a few more smiling people on earth is the reason for some hope that is still left in our world today!” – Samuel A. Bakutana

One evening 6 years ago when our daughter Petra was about one and a half years old, she randomly smiled at a very gloomy middle aged man passing by and he suddenly broke into a hillarious laughter outburst as he walked away. Lovely and refreshing!

Now, I too yearn to be refreshed daily with smiles of those around me. But I have chosen to focus on the opportunity to refresh others with my own smile. I’ve come to a conclusion that since I don’t see my own smile whenever I smile, it’s not meant for me but for those who see it. I’ll thus gladly gift the world with what belongs to it.

Secondly, a smile is aesthetic:

“Your beauty is enhanced when you genuinely deploy your smiling equipment.” – Samuel A. Bakutana

I remember a gentleman in a marriage forum I once spoke at who said, “No smiling woman isn’t beautiful!” You can imagine the discussion that ensued from such a statement. I believe he had some point and that point applies to men too. All of us. Smiling enhances our looks! And at times I can’t imagine some people without their smile!


The only warning here is to please keep it genuine, authentic, true. Otherwise the effect may be the opposite! Plastic smiles produce cosmetic results!

So try to always remember the line from Kirk Franklin song “Smile” which says, “You look much better when you smile.”

CONCLUSION:
A smile indeed never hurt anyone – either the one smiling or the one receiving it. In fact, that smile is both therapeutic and aesthetic. Give it to heal the world and to look better. Receive mine today! 😊

Don’t Joke with Social Media!

Today, Inspired Leader and Advocate Mercy Kainobwisho, the Director Intellectual Property, Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), wrote a piece titled, “Never underestimate the power of social media.” In the Facebook post, she brought out the following key observations:

💬 Social media has increasingly become the main channel of communication, decision making , mobilization, rumors, real and fake news, marketing and more.

💬 Social media also enables people to follow mentors and spiritual /counseling platforms.

💬 Social media has also become a database [for] searching people’s details and determining their personality.

💬 It is also used to determine potential employees, employers, husbands, wives and business partners and has a lot of power and influence.

💬 Social media will get you hired or fired.

💬 Social media content can be used to generate evidence against you.

💬 Social media will also lead to cancellation of unfair court or administrative decisions.

💬 Social media also poses a security risk. She concluded saying:

How we use it shapes our actions and the actions of people towards us and society.

As someone who tries to make the best use of a number of social media platforms, I hereby add to Mercy’s thought the following:

  • Maximize social media to inspire multitudes.

FACTS THIS WEEK:

🌅 This week has NEVER been there.
🌅 This week is here for a SHORT season: this week only!
🌅 This week will be OVER by the end of this week!

HERE IS WISDOM:
⏳ Once this week ends at the end of this week, it will never come back; we will never see it again; it will be GONE FOREVER.
⏳ There are things that are supposed to be done THIS week. Beyond this week, they won’t be done successfully.
⏳ There are opportunities that will present themselves to us ONLY this week. Once they pass, they have passed away!
⏳ There is favour that will be activated as grace to enable our success in THIS week. Once we lose focus, we will operate below average and miss chances of high performance.

RESOLUTION:
Therefore, to get the best out of this week demands that we utilize TIME very well this week:
⏰ Every meeting must be run with precision.
⏰ Every conversation needs to be an “influence conversation.”
⏰ Every phone call should be to the point and focused on productive issues.
⏰ Every appointment needs to be on time, with a clear agenda, and end in time for other things too.
⏰ Every hour needs to be well accounted for: well INVESTED — not well SPENT!
